Monument Valley

Monument Valley sits within the Navajo Nation reservation on the Arizona-Utah border. It is most well known for The Mittens, a pair of buttes that welcome visitors to the valley like a pair of open arms. It served as the backdrop to numerous John Ford-directed western movies and was also the location where Forrest Gump finally stopped running! Consequently, the vivid red mesas, buttes and open-skied vastness are familiar to many. Look behind the well-known facade, however, and you will see that that this is a place that is deeply spiritual to its Navajo guardians, a revered sacred place shrouded in fable.
